The Powerful Effects of Vitamin C

The Powerful Effects of Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of those powerhouse ingredients that you see used in skincare time and time again, this is because it offers so many benefits for the skin. Being a powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C will fight off free radical damage, brightening skin and improving both the texture and tone while boosting collagen and upping your skin’s vitality.

Vitamin C can also neutralise Chlorine by rapidly reducing the chlorine compounds and restoring the pH balance.

Chlorine is a harsh chemical element used as a powerful disinfectant used in cleaning and swimming pools. Chlorine is both toxic and corrosive, it quickly strips your skin of its natural moisturisers, irritating the surface and breaking down your skin’s natural barrier function. When left on your skin, Chlorine has a drying effect, causing irritation, itching and redness. This can especially be true for anyone prone to dryness, sensitive skin or eczema. This is why we must take extra care in looking after our chlorine-exposed skin, ensuring harmful chemicals are neutralised and the pH balance is restored to the skin.

If you’re a swimmer or anyone regularly exposed to chlorine, you know the havoc Chlorine can cause to your skin’s pH balance and barrier.
When you’re exposed to Chlorine, it bonds to your skin and hair, and for this reason, it’s more difficult to remove than either dirt or oil. To effectively neutralise the chlorine, remove chemical odours and bring the biome of your skin back into balance you must choose skincare that is nourishing and hydrating, but also formulated with ingredients that have a proven track record of counteracting chlorine.

We asked the Chief Chemist and formulator, Rita Sellars from pH Factor to explain how Vitamin C helps do this.

"While chlorine is important in pool systems to help disinfect, it can be very harsh on the skin, eyes and air. A chemical reaction takes place where
Vitamin C acts as a reducing agent. When it comes into contact with chlorine (specifically Hypochlorous Acid, HOCl, & Hypochlorite Ions, OCl⁻, the two primary forms of chlorine in pool water), it reduces these compounds into chloride ions (Cl⁻), which are harmless"
